Antioch Education Abroad (AEA)

Antioch Education Abroad

Since the 1950s, Antioch Education Abroad (AEA) has continued to develop and offer high-quality study abroad programs. By integrating resourceful academic content with cultural immersion, these innovative programs support and enhance students’ undergraduate experiences, both academically and culturally. Our students embrace the challenging opportunities to engage in deeply rewarding, often life-changing experiences of living and travel abroad. AEA faculty, experts in their respective fields, lead students on these explorations in diverse locations worldwide.

In today’s world, the experience of studying and living abroad is vital in preparing oneself for successful completion of an undergraduate degree, a graduate program, or a career in the professional world. Students may choose an AEA program to meet those needs. AEA faculty and staff make a special effort to personalize the study abroad experience for each participating student and to make the connection between theory and practice explicit. Our apprenticeships, internships, and independent study projects offer students the opportunity to address their individual interests, involve themselves in hands-on experiences, and gain the global competency that is necessary in today's society, both professionally and personally. Students in our programs gain a renewed sense of their power and purpose as scholars and globally-conscious citizens.

We invite students, study abroad advisors, faculty members, and parents to explore the learning opportunities offered by Antioch Education Abroad.

News and Updates

Both of AEA's Buddhist Studies programs were featured on a popular website for all issues relating to travel abroad. Our programs in Japan and India were highlighted in "Experience Mormonism (or Hinduism or Islam or Buddhism) For Yourself...," an article written by the Glimpse staff about various study abroad programs that relate to religions. Feel free to check it out or read more about our Buddhist Studies in Japan or Buddhist Studies in India programs!

AEA Alumnus Theodore Martland was recently featured in a New York Times "Education Life" slideshow. You can check out the photo and a brief caption here. The photo shows him working on his second film, Dhamma Dana. He filmed it entirely in Myanmar (Burma) while on independent study during the 2008 Antioch Buddhist Studies in India Program. It is a 30-minute documentary that takes you inside the Theravada monastic tradition of Myanmar. He had to obtain permission and special documents from the Burmese Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Burmese military government in order to travel throughout Myanmar on a special visa and film the rich Buddhist culture. More information about Theodore's film can be found here. We, at AEA, are very proud of Theodore's success!

The 30th Reunion of AEA's Buddhist Studies in India Program was a huge success! Alumni and faculty spanning several decades joined together in Yellow Springs to share memories, photos, and a few laughs. Sayadaw U Nyaneinda, abbot of the Burmese Vihar, and Sister Molini and Sister Dharmavijaya traveled from Bodh Gaya to visit with old friends. Robert Pryor, Director of the program since 1979, and Dianeah enjoyed sharing memories and discussing life with former students and faculty. Feel free to check out the photo gallery, which is filled with pictures from the Reunion weekend. You can also read the article that appeared in the Yellow Springs newspaper about our India Program and the Reunion.
