Antioch in Germany

Location, Schedule, & Accommodations

Location: The University and the City

Established in 1477, the Eberhard Karls Universität (Tübingen University) is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Germany, and it holds a distinguished place in the intellectual life of the country. The newsmagazine Der Spiegel recently reported that German university faculty rank Tübingen University among the country's ten leading schools in Biology, History, Medicine, English Studies, Education, Psychology, and Law. The University also received the top ranking for German Studies.

Over one-fourth of Tübingen's 85,000 residents are university students. University institutes and student housing are integrated into the town, occupying many of its historical edifices, including a ducal fortress. According to the news magazine Focus, the quality of life in Tübingen is considered among the best that Germany has to offer in terms of environment, culture, security, and health.

German Language Preparation

Language is the key to intellectual concepts, comfort, understanding and acceptance. Antioch will help students bring their present knowledge of German to a level of proficiency and ease. Antioch's program fee covers 8 - 13 weeks of language study and orientation (depending on full-year or one semester program enrollment) prior to beginning classes at the University. Most students with intermediate-level German and two to three months of in-country intensive study are soon able to handle university studies with relative ease.  Students improve their language skills before the semester begins at a Goethe Institut course and through the comprehensive orientation program offered by the university -- the German Compact Program.

Nearby Universities

Students may take advantage of opportunities at nearby universities while enrolled in the Antioch in Germany program.

Students with interests in applied or interdisciplinary sciences may wish to spend part of their academic time at the Universität Hohenheim in Stuttgart, which offers programs in food technology, nutritional science, and agricultural sciences. Supervised field experiences are part of many Hohenheim programs.

The Universität Stuttgart (formerly Technical University Stuttgart) offers special programs in architecture, engineering construction, water supply, communications, surveying, machine design, textile technology, aviation, and electrical technologies. Students may also find additional programs and class offerings at other German institutions.

Accommodations and Meals

Goethe Institut

Housing is pre-arranged by the Resident Director on a double occupancy basis; single occupancy rooms are limited to select locations. A cash allowance is allotted for meals. Meal plans can be reserved in advance or purchased upon arrival by the student. Costs and options vary according to location and are outlined in a Goethe Institut brochure, which is sent to accepted students.

German Compact Program

Students move into their dormitories before the orientation program begins and take meals in the student cafeteria, in town, or in the dormitory. A cash allowance is allotted for meals.

A two-week portion of the program takes place in Blaubeuren, where students live and eat together in the Heinrich Fabri Institut. Housing and meals in Blaubeuren are covered by the Antioch program fee.

Academic Semester(s)

Students are housed in modern dormitories with German students. Care is taken not to place students in international dorms or American clusters. Normally, no more than two students are placed in the same dorm. All rooms are singles. All dormitories have kitchens; most have social space. A cash allowance is allotted for meals (200 Euros/month). Meals may be taken in student cafeterias, restaurants, or dormitory kitchens.

Like all old German universities, Tübingen is not situated on a campus, and dorms are located throughout the town. Antioch's Resident Directors make housing arrangements based on each student's indicated priorities and interests. Non-dormitory housing is not payable by Antioch; no refund will be given for alternative housing.
