"Namaste" Photo By Heidi Lynch, Saint Michael's College, India Program14 viewsLocal boys from the village accompanied us on our hike to Mahakala caves. Most of the time they were tugging at our sides repeating, “Yes Money? Yes Money?” or “Give me pen.” Yet, it is the genuine human to human interactions, like the one captured here that I remember most.

"Paris in Dehli" Photo By Kristina Johnson, Davidson College, India Program17 viewsThe bicycle so often represents scenes of gentle European countryside, so it was a shift to see this shot in the alleyways of Old Dehli. The purple wall behind the figure and the green vibrancy to his side remind the viewer where that this is indeed India.

"Sarah, Full Moon Day" Photo By Aine McCarthy, Wesleyan University, India Program23 viewsAine's five photos are all snapshots into the incredible life of modern Bodh Gaya, where buses compete with rickshaws on dusty roads and pilgrims come in droves to visit the Mahabodhi Temple. This stupa is home to the Bodhi Tree, beneath which the Prince Siddhartha became forever known as The Awakened One. Pilgrims come humbly to this place bringing an incredible depth of spiritual practice; prayer is truly in the air, as prayer flags flap in the wind with the day’s laundry.

"Unity in Purpose" Photo By Kelsey Shanesy, Macalester College, Japan Program22 viewsI took this photo on a retreat to Hokyoji Zen Monastery. It depicts a group of monks and students preparing to go out on a round of takuhatsu, or exchange of monetary funds for karmic merit. Upon leaving the temple, the group bows to and shows respect to all directions.

"Rupees or Peace" Photo By Kristina Johnson, Davidson College, India Program18 viewsI’m still not sure whether the peace sign this little girl gave me meant the same thing to me as it did to her. Yet, it seemed so fitting given her nose ring. Rings of this type weren’t common in the Bihar region where I was. She likely traveled to Bodh Gaya from elsewhere.

The Reason Why We Care119 viewsOne principle in environmental ethics argues that nature has value for its own sake, an intrinsic value that transcends its economic value. In addition to the need to safeguard ecosystems for planetary health and quality of life, we also have a responsibility to future generations to preserve the aesthetic beauty found in nature.

Salto Morato Nature Reserve118 viewsThis reserve protects a large tract of Brazil's Atlantic Forest, which is a biodiversity 'hotspot'. This is our first stop after arriving in Brazil. We stay for five days for an introduction to the fauna and flora of this biome, and lectures covering the main threats to biodiversity and Brazilian environmental protection laws.

"Collecting Alms" Photo By Emily Schlickman, Washington University in St. Louis, Japan Program87 viewsPhoto Location: Hokyoji Temple
This is a photo of a few students at Hokyoji Temple before
going into town to collect alms from the townpeople. Here, all of the
monks are chanting a "sutra" to wish the students good travels. When in
town, the students chanted "sutras" in front of houses and stores to offer
protection to those inside.
