"The Rabbit Invasion" Photo By Torre Johnson, Oberlin College, Europe in Transition Program96 viewsWhile I was in Germany I had the opportunity to see the carnival known as Fasching. The carnival consisted of a parade with some of the most imaginative costumes I have ever seen. There were many groups of people all wearing very elaborately carved masks and wonderful costumes. The themes ranged from the rabbits pictured here to costumes celebrating the World Cup in Germany and even to pink Native American costumes. They would run up to the adults, rub confetti in their hair and throw candy to the children. The whole experience was fully surreal and truly incredible.

"Meditation" Photo By Emily Schlickman, Washington University in St. Louis, Japan Program61 viewsPhoto Location: Koshoji Temple, Kyoto
This is a photo of Jaime Honkawa during a morning session of
meditation in the "zendo" of our home temple. Every morning we would wake
up at 4:30 and would sit for 40 minutes. Initially, it was completely
dark in the zendo but as the sun would come up, light would begin
filtering in through the "shoji" screens. This picture captures this
moment.

This is a photo of traditional Japanese sandals in a "ryokan"

This is a photo of a monk at Hokyoji Temple, a strict Zen

hiked up to a rock where a famous 13th century Zen master had meditated
for 18 years of his life.

This is a photo of a few students at Hokyoji Temple before
going into town to collect alms from the townpeople. Here, all of the
monks are chanting a "sutra" to wish the students good travels. When in
town, the students chanted "sutras" in front of houses and stores to offer
protection to those inside.

This is a photo of Ermine Algaier performing a purification
ritual underneath a waterfall in Tenkawa Village during the month of
November. This is one of the first rituals performed by "Shugendo"
practitioners--mountain ascetics--before entering the mountains. It
serves to purify one's mind so that it is in the correct state for
practice.
