News and Updates
August 2010: We have modified the curricular content of two of our programs. In our Europe in Transition program, we have added the themes of the World of Islam and Europe and Global Recession and Europe's response to address the current concerns of European policymakers and publics. In addition, in response to student interest, our program in Japan will assume the name of Japan and Its Buddhist Traditions to reflect the greater emphasize we place on Japanese society and culture and the ways in which Buddhism aids in the understanding of Japan.
Last week, Forbes released their 2010 rankings of the best colleges and universities in the U.S. We calculated that 20% of students enrolled in AEA programs come from the top 20 colleges and universities, as ranked by Forbes. Dhamma Dana (The Gift of Dhamma), a documentary filmed by Theodore Martland while on independent study during AEA's Buddhist Studies in India program, has just won at the 2009 Queens International Film Festival! The film was selected as the Best Domestic Documentary in the 2009 Queens International Film Festival in New York City. The film beat out 36 documentaries by United States filmmakers and over 1000 submissions in the competition. Theodore Martland was the only young filmmaker to win an award outside the Young Filmmaker category. He filmed it entirely in Myanmar (Burma) while on independent study during the 2008 Antioch Buddhist Studies in India Program. (Check out http://www.lowpressurefilms.com for more information.)
Both of AEA's Buddhist Studies programs were featured on a popular website for all issues relating to travel abroad. Our programs in Japan and India were highlighted in "Experience Mormonism (or Hinduism or Islam or Buddhism) For Yourself...," an article written by the Glimpse staff about various study abroad programs that relate to religions. Feel free to check it out or read more about our Buddhist Studies in Japan or Buddhist Studies in India programs!
AEA Alumnus Theodore Martland was recently featured in a New York Times "Education Life" slideshow. You can check out the photo and a brief caption here. The photo shows him working on his second film, Dhamma Dana. He filmed it entirely in Myanmar (Burma) while on independent study during the 2008 Antioch Buddhist Studies in India Program. It is a 30-minute documentary that takes you inside the Theravada monastic tradition of Myanmar. He had to obtain permission and special documents from the Burmese Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Burmese military government in order to travel throughout Myanmar on a special visa and film the rich Buddhist culture. More information about Theodore's film can be found here. We, at AEA, are very proud of Theodore's success!
The 30th Reunion of AEA's Buddhist Studies in India Program was a huge success!
