Antioch Education Abroad (AEA) is an integral component of Antioch University, a visionary academic community composed of 5 campuses. Since the 1950s, Antioch Education Abroad has been a pioneer in global education, offering courses that integrate resourceful academic content with cultural immersion. From Buddhist Studies in India to Arts and Culture in Mali to Brazilian Ecosystems, we develop and offer unique study abroad programs in Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. Exploring their academic fields in diverse locations worldwide, students are taught, mentored, and led by on-site and AEA faculty who are experts in their respective fields.

In today’s world, the experience of studying and living abroad is vital in preparing oneself for successful completion of an undergraduate degree, a graduate program, or a career in the professional world. Students may choose an AEA program to meet those needs. AEA faculty and staff make a special effort to personalize the study abroad experience for each participating student and to make the connection between theory and practice explicit. Our students engage in apprenticeships, internships, and independent field study projects. These global opportunities address their individual interests through hands-on experiences, allowing them to attain the global competency, both professionally and personally, necessary in today’s society. Our programs currently serve qualified students from over 140 universities nationwide and abroad. In fact, in 2010, 20% of students enrolled in AEA programs came from the top 20 colleges and universities in the U.S., as ranked by U.S. News and World Report and Forbes.

We invite students, study abroad advisors, faculty members, and parents to explore the learning opportunities offered by Antioch Education Abroad.

News and Updates

August 2010: We have modified the curricular content of two of our programs. In our Europe in Transition program, we have added the themes of the World of Islam and Europe and Global Recession and Europe's response to address the current concerns of European policymakers and publics.  In addition, in response to student interest, our program in Japan will assume the name of Japan and Its Buddhist Traditions to reflect the greater emphasize we place on Japanese society and culture and the ways in which Buddhism aids in the understanding of Japan.

August 2010: Both U.S. News and World Report and Forbes recently released their 2010 rankings of the best colleges and universities in the U.S. We calculated that 20% of students enrolled in AEA programs come from the top 20 colleges and universities, as ranked by these two publications. Dhamma Dana (The Gift of Dhamma), a documentary filmed by Theodore Martland while on independent study during AEA's Buddhist Studies in India program, has just won at the 2009 Queens International Film Festival! The film was selected as the Best Domestic Documentary in the 2009 Queens International Film Festival in New York City. The film beat out 36 documentaries by United States filmmakers and more than 1000 submissions in the competition. Theodore Martland was the only young filmmaker to win an award outside the Young Filmmaker category. He filmed it entirely in Myanmar (Burma) while on independent study during the 2008 Antioch Buddhist Studies in India Program. (Check out http://www.lowpressurefilms.com  for more information.)

Both of AEA's Buddhist Studies programs were featured on a popular website for all issues relating to travel abroad. Our programs in Japan and India were highlighted in "Experience Mormonism (or Hinduism or Islam or Buddhism) For Yourself...," an article written by the Glimpse staff about various study abroad programs that relate to religions. Feel free to check it out or read more about our Buddhist Studies in Japan or Buddhist Studies in India programs!
